A Direct Cremation is a Funeral with no service. Unlike a traditional Funeral Service which can take 3-4 weeks to organise, a Direct Cremation usually takes place within two weeks, with the ashes being ready for collection the next day.
Direct Cremation is a low cost, no fuss alternative to a traditional Funeral with many families choosing to commemorate loved ones in other ways. We understand that Direct Cremation is a personal choice and is not for everyone, so we offer two types of Direct Cremation, an Attended Direct Cremation and Unattended Direct Cremation.
With an Unattended Direct Cremation, the coffin arrives at the West Entrance which is a private entrance to our building, with no mourners permitted to witness or attend the arrival of the coffin.
The Attended Direct Cremation offers a little more formality and the oppertunity for loved ones to gather and witness the arrival of the coffin at the chapel. Play music, lay flowers and gather for a moment of reflection.
Attended Direct Cremation;
The coffin will arrive at the chapel entrance of our crematorium, usually in a hearse, and be lifted onto our wheeled bier. Mourners can gather under the porch for a moment of reflection, to a piece of music of chosen by the family or loved ones. The coffin is then wheeled into the chapel, a second piece of music is then played whilst the coffin is brought into the chapel and laid to rest in the alcove under dimmed lights. No mourners are permitted inside the chapel, and once the second piece of music draws to a close, the chapel lights are dimmed and the entrance doors closed. This option is a popular choice for families as it can offer a level of closure that an Unattended Direct Cremation cannot.
Unattended Direct Cremation;
The coffin enters the Crematorium via the West Entrance which is a private entrance for Funeral Directors only. The coffin is often transported in a private ambulance and there are no attendees present to witness the arrival of the coffin. We don’t permit family to gather at the West Entrance.
Please note that these two types of Direct Cremation are unique to Northumberland Crematorium, and have been designed to offer families and loved ones more choice to tailor their cremation type. Other Crematoriums services and guidelines will vary.
