OUR STORY

Family at the heart, providing comfort and support for over two decades

Formerly known as Northumbrian Woodland Burials, Northumberland Woodland Burial & Crematorium is ran and owned by Husband and Wife, Scott and Laura Clarehugh who still live on site.

As a family-run business, our care for the land and the people we serve is at the heart of everything we do. We are guided by values of compassion, respect, and stewardship, ensuring that our woodlands remain a peaceful place for reflection now and for generations to come.

In 2018, we explored the idea of opening chapel and crematorium on our site in our natural woodland setting. After careful planning and research, we began a four-year project to build Northumberland Crematorium.

Our aim is to enhance the natural beauty of the site and provide a peaceful space for reflection. We keep weekends service-free so visitors can take their time, making the site not just a resting place, but a place for the living to pause, reflect, and enjoy the surroundings

We promise to provide care, support, and understanding at every step. From guiding you through planning to helping you honour the wishes of your loved ones, we are here to ease the practical and emotional burdens during difficult times. Our commitment is to ensure that every detail is handled with dignity, respect, and compassion, giving you the space to grieve, reflect, and find comfort in the natural beauty of our grounds

Our natural grounds are more than a resting place; they are a sanctuary for all who visit. Visitors are welcome to take a quiet moment to reflect, enjoy gentle walks among the woodland and wildflower meadows, or simply sit and take in the peace of the surroundings. Whether pausing to remember a loved one, walking a dog, or bringing a flask of tea to watch the wildlife and the nearby Eshott Airfield, our site is a place to connect with nature and find calm in a busy world.

Our aim is to develop the natural beauty of the site and to offer a peaceful place for reflection for loved ones who visit. We don’t hold services on weekends to ensure that loved ones have time and space to visit. We believe that our site is not just a resting place for those no longer with us, but a place for those who are left behind. To take a moment, reflect, walk the dog, bring a flask of tea and watch the aircraft from the nearby Eshott Airfield.

We are now a proud team of 10, who have decades of experience in the bereavement sector, with many of our team having spent years working as Funeral Directors. This experience has equipped them with all the skills needed to support and guide you through this very difficult time.

Founded by Scott’s late father, Steve Clarehugh in 2002, we have been supporting families through difficult times for over two decades. Set in 38 acres of semi mature woodland and wildflower meadows, ideal for short walks and enjoyed by many, as a place to find peace and enjoy the natural surroundings.

In 2018 we began to develop the idea of opening a chapel and crematorium on our site and were curious to see if this could be done in such a way that didn’t have a negative impact on the environment. After lots of careful planning and research we realised that this could be achieved and we embarked on a four year project to build Northumberland Crematorium.

Cremation services are restricted to a maximum of 5 per day, this is to ensure that no one feels rushed at such a difficult time. Northumberland Crematorium is open as a community building, used by local groups and Thirston Parish Council outside of service hours. We hold seasonal memorial services, as well as wreathe making & natural memorial workshops for our clients and close rural community.

We are here to support and guide you through this difficult time.
